What stuck with me about Brazil?

I never took the time to learn much about Brazil, in my mind I just always knew that they were known for soccer. Something I learned was how Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery but was the first to claim it was free of anti-black racism. I came across this section on page 5 and it resonated with me because what would lead them to claiming that they were against anti-black racism, but it took them long to let go of slavery. What did eventually lead them to finally abolishing it and why?
